Election qualifying concludes, most local races will be uncontested

Qualifying for the May Primary Election and the November General Election conclude on Friday, and most local races will be uncontested.

Incumbent Floyd County Commissioner Allison Watters has no opposition.

Neither does Mike Burnes, who will take the commission post held by Wright Bagby, who is not seeking re-election.

Melinda Strickland, Jay Shell, and Danny Waits are uncontested and will be re-elected to the Floyd County Board of Education.

District Attorney Leigh Patterson, Coroner Gene Proctor, Tax Commissioner Kevin Payne, Superior Court Judges Jack Niedrach and Bryan Johnson, Floyd County Magistrate Judge Gene Richardson, and Floyd County Probate Judge Steve Burkhalter all have no opposition.

Contested races include Floyd County Sheriff which will see incumbent Dave Roberson being challenged in the Republican Primary by Robbie Whitfield.

In the Republican Primary for Clerk of Superior Court, Mary Hardin Thornton is challenging incumbent Barbara Penson.

Incumbent Chuck Hufstetler will run uncontested for State Senate, but Colton Moore will have Democratic opposition in November as Bart Alexander Bryant qualified to run for the District 53 seat.

For State House, Katie Dempsey is unopposed in the Republican Primary but will face a Democratic challenger, Kevin Aronhalt, in November.

Eddie Lumsden has no primary challengers but will face Democrat Logan Johnson in the General Election.

In the 5th District, State Representative Matt Barton has no challengers..

For Congress, no Republicans are challenging Marjorie Taylor Greene, but four Democrats have qualified. They are Clarence Blalock Shawn Harris, Deric Houston, and Joseph Leigh.
