A lot of work has gone into transforming the former Glenwood Primary School into the new Floyd County Police Department headquarters, and the move will take place on Tuesday.
According to Captain Ron Hunton with the Floyd County Police Department, the move has been taking place in stages.
“The officers are still out working,” he said. “As far as services at the department, things like records, we don’t want to be any kind of interruption in service.”
In May of 2023, the Floyd County Board of Education transferred the property to the county.
Glenwood closed at the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
Captain Hunton added that the new headquarters will offer much-needed additional space.
“There has been a lot of work that has gone into this project to transform the old school,” Captain Hunton said. “One of the good things about this new facility is going to be the opportunities for increased training. The gym is a pretty large space, and that is going to allow us better training opportunities for our officers. We are going to have space indoors to host larger classes.”
As part of the negotiations in 2022 regarding the distribution of local sales taxes, an agreement was reached to convert the joint law enforcement center downtown into additional courtroom space.
The Rome City Police Department is currently housed in a temporary location off of Technology Parkway and will move into a new permanent headquarters on Riverside Parkway once it is constructed.
Once again, Floyd County Police will be in their new home in the former Glenwood Primary School building at 1 Police Plaza on Tuesday.
