-Staff reports-
A teacher was arrested at Rome Middle School on Monday on a felony count of possession of a Schedule I controlled substance.
According to a Rome Police Department report:
An officer was advised that a teacher had been caught vaping in one of the restrooms.
45-year-old Becky Lane Scott admitted that it was a THC vape, and she told police that she took a hit from it because she gets really bad anxiety during testing week.
The Rome Middle School website’s staff page lists Scott as a special education teacher at the school.
The Rome City School System issued a statement which read:
“Rome City Schools is issuing this statement to inform the community of an incident that occurred today at Rome Middle School involving a staff member and local law enforcement.
The situation was addressed promptly by authorities, and there was no significant disruption to the school day following the immediate response. At no time were students in danger, and the safety of all students and staff remains the district’s top priority.
As this is both a personnel and a legal matter, the district is limited in the information it can provide. Rome City Schools is cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities and continues to follow all district policies and procedures regarding this incident.
The district appreciates the community’s understanding and requests that stakeholders avoid speculation while this matter is addressed through the proper legal and administrative channels.
