Emergency crews rescued a construction worker Tuesday morning after a concrete floor collapsed at the old Taylor’s Farm Supply building on Leake Street.
The incident happened at 11 West Leake Street, next to the railroad tracks across from South Museum Drive. Workers were standing on the exterior concrete loading dock — a former loading area for the longtime business — when they were using a demolition saw to cut the floor. Without warning, the concrete pad gave way and dropped approximately ten feet into the basement below.
All the workers were standing on top of the concrete when it collapsed. Debris did not trap anyone underneath.
The call initially came in as a medical emergency for a fainting episode. It quickly escalated into a full rescue operation when crews discovered the traumatic injury from the fall. The Cartersville Fire Department responded with an engine company, heavy rescue unit, and aerial ladder truck. Metro Atlanta Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
Firefighters climbed down into the hole, stabilized the patient on-site, and provided immediate medical care, including an IV and pain medication. They then used a Stokes basket attached to the aerial ladder to lift the injured worker out of the basement carefully.
The victim, an adult male, suffered at least a leg injury in the fall. Crews transported him to a local hospital for further treatment.
Crews reported no other injuries.
