Sheriff’s Santa for Seniors looking for sponsors

December 5, 2019–7:42 a.m.

STAFF REPORTS

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office is once again teaming up with the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Department to help make it a Merry Christmas for area seniors.

The Sheriff’s Santa for Seniors program is for those who do not have any family and would not otherwise receive a Christmas present.

Deputy Jimmy Alred with the Sheriff’s Office said he had the idea to start the program about 15-years ago after going to pick up his grandmother at a local retirement and assisted living center for Christmas.

“We went in that morning and there was a lady at the door all dressed up,” he said.  “So, we got my grandmother and took her to the house.  Then when we came back, that lady was still sitting there.  We knew the staff up there so we asked what is going on with the lady at the door.  We were told she was waiting for someone to come see her but she doesn’t have anybody.  That ripped me up.  So, my major at that time, Tommy McGuire, talked about it and decided that the next year we were going to do something for seniors.

In the first year, two seniors were served by the program.

That number grew to 206 last year.
