Floyd Commission approves rezoning for winery

July 29, 2020–11:24 a.m.

The Floyd County Commission has approved a rezoning request and special use permit for a winery on Billy Pyle Road.

It will be the Rome area’s first winery, according to the applicant Billy Newby.

“We have nothing like that around us, but it has been very positive for the areas that do,” he said.  “Polk County has one that is planted now.  Paulding County has one that is about to open.  One has just opened in Acworth and one in Cherokee County.  As you know if you’ve been to North Georgia, there are wineries all over the place, so it’s a growing business.  It will bring additional business into the county.  We are a member of Georgia Grown and the Georgia Agritourism organization.”

The winery would be open for public events.

“We would be a late-night operation,” Newby stressed.  “We’re looking at being closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.  We’d be open Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the latest, and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 until 9 p.m. at the latest.  On Sunday, the operating hours would be from noon until 6 p.m., so there’s not going to be any late-night traffic coming out of there.”

The winery is expected to produce between 2,000 and 5,000 cases of wine annually.
