The Rome City Commission meets Monday at 6:30 p.m. but most of the action is expected to occur during the pre-meeting caucus.
The session will start early at 4:30 p.m. to allow time for further discussions regarding the city’s backing of bonds for the new Rome Middle School project.
Commissioner Craig McDaniel called for the commission to revisit the discussions just to make sure that everyone is on the same page before making a 20-year commitment to pay back the bonds using proceeds raised by future special purpose, local option sales taxes for education.
“I will ask if there is any possibility that we can go ahead and build the education part of it, which includes the classrooms as well as the auditorium,” he said. “Then, maybe let the next ELOST package take care of the athletics facility and the storm shelter.”
McDaniel said with $54 million that is expected to be raised by an EPLOST approved by voters last year and $16 million in state funding, there would be enough money to pay for the classrooms and auditorium portion of the project.
