The Rome City Commission has tabled a rezoning request for townhomes on the North Broad Extension.
The project would consist of 14 single-family attached townhomes, approximately 1,500 square feet, that will sell for $225,000 to $250,000 each.
Sam Evans, who lives in the nearby North Point subdivision, spoke against the application. One of his reasons was the proposed improvements to the roadway in the area.
“Once we get that, it’s going to make these houses back into driveway worse,” he said.” We’ve got people speeding right now and we know we will have people speeding once we improve the road. So, the bottom line is we’re not in favor of any townhouses being built. We would not feel like that this needs to be changed. It ought to be single-family dwellings, and that’s all.”
Walt Griffin spoke in favor of the project.
“I understand the concern about backing out into the road, but there are currently 36 driveways on the same road that they back out into the same exact road,” Busby said. “The option would be to do single-family houses, which is how it is zoned now, and we can we can get eight driveways there now. This is just simply increasing the number from 8 to 14. It’s a little more but otherwise the single-family homes are going to be well into the $350,000 range and that will put us out of the affordable housing on that market.”
Again, the commission tabled the application.
Commissioners did approve a rezoning for six townhomes at the current site of an abandoned parking lot on West Eighth Avenue, and a special use permit for an adult day care center at 213 East 16th Street.
The commission also approved a rezoning request for property on Hardy Avenue that will allow Lovejoy Baptist Church to relocate and construct a new building to expand the clothing and food services.
