The Floyd County Commission has joined the Rome City Commission in approving an extension of the moratorium on new convenience stores or gas stations.
The original moratorium was approved in June to give the city time to consider new regulations.
The moratorium has been extended until April 1.
“Also with the knowledge that it is possible that you can lift that moratorium prior to that time, assuming you get to where you want to be and where the county needs to be with an ordinance,” County Attorney Chris Jackson told county commissioners on Tuesday. “We expect that the county would consider an ordinance in January, in all likelihood, maybe at your second meeting in January.”
Some proposed regulations went before the planning commission earlier this month, but they were tabled pending clarifications of some of the definitions and restrictions.
“The staff recommendation is going to the planning commission for the December meeting,” said Rome City Clerk Joe Smith during Monday’s city commission meeting. “Then whatever comes out of the planning commission will come to the city and county commissions for consideration.”
