The Floyd County Commission has awarded a bid to Vision Development & Construction for the Police Department Shooting Range & Training Center.
The contract is for just over $1.5 million and is funded through the 2023 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
The Commission also moved forward with operational upgrades for the Jail, awarding a bid to Southeastern Laundry Equipment Sales in the amount of $63,150 for a new commercial washer-extractor and gas drying tumbler.
The Floyd County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) secured two major funding boosts to enhance local safety operations:
- A COPS Technology and Equipment Grant in the amount of $1,731,500 awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice. This federal funding allows upgrades to components within the public safety radio network, which began operation in 2012.
- A Georgia Power Foundation Grant in the amount of $6,500 will be used to upfit emergency response trailers, improving response for incidents and community events.
In other business, State Senator Chuck Hufstetler was recognized for receiving the Association County Commissioners of Georgia Legislative Service Award for his work with county government during the 2026 General Assembly Session.
“He was instrumental in Senate Bill 566, working along with ACCG and the legislature to advance meaningful property tax reforms that benefit both taxpayers and local government,” said Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord. “He modernized our Georgia notice of assessments by making property tax information easier for taxpayers to understand, while helping counties administer the process more efficiently.”
More recently, Hufstetler was presented an award by the Georgia Watch consumer advocacy group for his organizing efforts in the Georgia General Assembly to pass legislation preventing electric companies from shifting costs in services to data centers onto other customers.
“Ultimately, it did not make it to the floor for a vote, but he has worked very diligently on that, as well as the Medical Debt Fairness Act,” McCord added.
Also on Tuesday, the commission approved a memorandum of understanding with Pirelli through the Rome-Floyd Development Authority.
Pirelli recently announced a $1.2 billion dollar expansion in Rome, which will increase the capability at the manufacturing site from 450,000 to 6 million tires a year, and the addition of 1,000 jobs.
