The Rome City Commission has approved an extension of the moratorium on the issuance of permits for any new convenience stores or gas stations.
The original moratorium was approved in June to give the city time to consider new regulations.
“That moratorium is set to expire in January,” according to Rome City Clerk Joe Smith. “The staff recommendation is going to the planning commission for the December meeting. Then whatever comes out of the planning commission will come to the city and county commissions for consideration.”
The moratorium is now extended to April 1.
“Since the work is not going to be done until early January, I think you all feel that you need more time,” Smith told city commissioners.
The Floyd County Commission is expected to vote on a similar extension when it meets on Tuesday.
Some proposed regulations went before the planning commission earlier this month, but they were tabled pending clarifications of some of the definitions and restrictions.
